FAQ

Q: Do we have puppies available now/soon?

A: No, sorry. An average size Shiba Inu litter is often only 2-4 puppies. Bare in mind that your chosen breeder has likely bred the litter to keep first choice puppy for themselves, meaning there is typically only 1-3 puppies available in any litter.

The general consensus amongst Australian Shiba Breeders is that once you have been approved for a puppy, you will then likely wait 18-24mths (sometimes more) for a puppy to become available. We know that's a long time, but your Shiba will be worth the wait!

For a list of Australian Breeders, please visit www.dogzonline.com.au

Q: Can I be added to your waitlist?

A: Here at Ilsonyo, we do not keep a "first in, first served" wait list. We instead choose to assess the puppy's temperament in our best effort to match them with a family environment where they will thrive.

Please understand, with many inquiries each week & us only breeding a limited number of litters each year, not all applications will be successful. We try to keep our approved applicants list to a number we should be able to accommodate in 2 years or so.

To be considered for a future Ilsonyo puppy, please complete our Questionnaire which will be sent to you via email upon receiving your inquiry.

Q: How much does a Shiba Inu cost to buy?

A: The typical price for a Shiba Inu puppy in Australia is AUD$4000-$5000.

Occasionally, breeders may have adult show/breeding dogs that are looking for their retirement home, these may cost less than typical puppy price.

Q: Do Shibas shed/lose coat?

A: YES! Shibas shed their coat twice a year. We like to joke that "they shed twice a year, for 5mths at a time", but this is not really the case.

BUT! When they do shed, it will be messy. It will feel like they've been shedding forever. You will find Shiba hair everywhere (even in rooms they don't typically go). Your red Shiba will drop so much coat that they will be mistaken for a dingo. We don't tell you this to scare you off, We tell you so you're prepared!

Q: Do you Health Test?

A: Yes. All of our dogs we intend to breed from will have been;

  • Hip scored (ANKC CHEDS),
  • Patellas certified,
  • Eyes tested (ANKC ACES), &
  • DNA tested for GM1/GM2 (Gangliosidosis).

Q: Will my Shiba have "Breeders Terms"?

A: Occasionally we may find ourselves in a position where we have an exceptional puppy whom we might like to incorporate in to our breeding program down the track. You may be given this option, but are under no obligation to take a Shiba from us with "Breeders Terms".

If you would like to be considered for a Shiba on "Breeders Terms", please contact us for more information only if you meet the following criteria;

  • live in South East Queensland,
  • have a secure fence, &
  • have no other entire (undesexed) dogs in your home.

Q: What paperwork will come with my Shiba?

A: You will be provided;

  • Dogs Queensland Pedigree Papers - Companions will be on the Limited Register (no exceptions),
  • Desexing/Care Contract,
  • Vaccination Certificate,
  • Microchip Details/Transfer Form, &
  • Veterinarian Health Certificate (less than 10 days before leaving us).

Q: Are Shibas suitable for homes with children?

A: In short, they can be. As with any breed, the individual personality of the dog combined with the way in which they're raised (what is "normal" for them) will determine the individual dog's compatibility with children.

As a mother myself, my son was raised amongst our dogs. As a toddler, he was never left unattended with our dogs, was taught to be gentle & all dogs were given a "safe place" in which there was no children allowed.

If you would like to discuss this further, please Contact Us.

Q: I/We live outside of Australia and wish to purchase a Shiba. Can you arrange this?

A: At this stage, we are not able to accommodate overseas buyers.

Q: Can I visit your home and/or meet your dogs?

A: All approved applicants will be given the opportunity to visit our home and meet our dogs, in fact, we encourage it!

We do not allow people in our home when we have heavily pregnant girls or young babies. This is for our dog's health & safety. We will do our best to be accommodating but cannot normally guarantee a visit day & time months in advance. Visits are likely to be scheduled 2-3wks ahead of time.

If you're wanting to meet a Shiba or get a "Shiba fix", please Contact Us & we can advise on Shiba Meets or Dog Shows in your area where you can meet with Us or other Shiba Owners/Breeders.

Q: Will I get to choose my puppy?

A: No. While all consideration will be given to your preference of gender & colour, the final decision on which puppy you will be offered will be Ours.
